Our approach
to early learning.
We believe children are capable, curious, and full of wonder. Every child who comes through our door carries their own spark, a drive to explore, to question, to create. We honor that spark.

How children learn
at the Nest.
Children learn best when they feel safe, seen, and free to explore. That's why our curriculum isn't pulled from a rigid binder. It grows from what the children show us.
Ms Tee and our caregivers watch closely. We notice what fascinates each child, the toddler who lines up every block by color, the infant reaching for leaves in the garden. Those observations shape what happens next.
This is child-led, play-based learning.

Rooted in culture
and care.
At the Nest, learning reaches beyond the classroom walls, and beyond borders. Ms Tee brings the Mahumbwe tradition into our daily rhythm. Mahumbwe is a cherished form of childhood play from Zimbabwe, where children learn through nature, creativity, and teamwork.
Think mud between tiny fingers. Water flowing over sticks and stones. Leaves gathered and sorted. Cooking tools borrowed from the kitchen to stir imaginary meals.
We also weave in stories, songs, and traditions from the many backgrounds our families represent. Culturally enriched learning isn't an add-on here. It's woven into who we are.
The whole
child.
A child who feels emotionally secure is a child ready to learn. That's why we pay close attention to the inner world of every child at the Nest.
We use visual tools for recognizing feelings, simple picture cards and charts that help even the youngest children name what's happening inside. Sad. Frustrated. Excited. Proud.
We don't separate "learning time" from "care time." At Mercy Nest, they are the same thing. A child held through a hard moment is learning trust. A child guided through breathing exercises is building lifelong coping skills.
"When we care for a child, we are caring for a whole family."

What we believe in.
Our approach is guided by a set of core beliefs. These shape every decision we make, from how we set up a room to how we welcome a new family.
Family Partnership
Parents and caregivers are a child's first teachers. We work alongside you, not apart from you.
Inclusion & Diversity
Every family's background, language, and traditions are honored and reflected in our learning environment.
Open Communication
We share openly about your child's day, their growth, and any concerns. We expect the same in return.
Quality Environment
Our space is thoughtfully designed to invite exploration, creativity, and comfort.
The Power of Play
Play is not a break from learning. It is how young children build every skill they need.
Family Participation
We welcome families into the life of the Nest through events, volunteering, and shared traditions.
Our program aligns with Maryland's early learning standards, set by the MSDE Office of Child Care.
